Arbitrage

Arbitrage consists of storing energy when prices are low and re-injecting it into the grid when prices are high. It is a major economic strategy for BESS operators.

Autoconsommation

Self-consumption consists of consuming on-site energy produced by a local source (solar, wind) or stored. The BESS allows for optimizing this consumption by shifting the load.

BMS (management system)

The BMS is the electronic system that monitors and manages cell parameters (voltage, current, temperature). It ensures the safety and balancing of the fleet's cells.

C-rate

The C-rate defines the speed at which a battery charges or discharges relative to its nominal capacity. A 1C rate means the battery is charged or discharged in one hour.

LFP Chemistry

Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistry is known for its thermal stability and long lifespan. It is very common in industrial BESS projects in Mauritius.

NMC Chemistry

Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) chemistry offers a higher energy density than LFP. It allows for more compact systems for the same storage capacity.

Cycles

One cycle corresponds to one full discharge and charge of the battery. The total number of cycles determines the economic lifespan of the BESS system.

Dégradation

Degradation is the progressive loss of capacity or power of the cells due to cycling and ageing. It is influenced by temperature, SoC, and C-rate.

Effacement

Curtailment consists of reducing electrical consumption over a given period to relieve the grid. The BESS can provide reserve power during voltage or frequency events.

the CEB grid

The CEB grid is the wholesale electricity market platform in Europe where prices are set in the short term. Operators inject or withdraw power there to optimise their revenue.

IEC 62933

The IEC 62933 standard defines the requirements for electrical energy storage systems. It frames the design, safety, and interoperability of equipment.

IEC 60364 / CEB standards

The IEC 60364 / CEB standards define the rules for the design and implementation of low-voltage electrical installations in Mauritius. They are essential for the compliance of BESS installations.

PCS (converter)

The PCS is the power converter that transforms direct current (DC) from batteries into alternating current (AC) for the grid. It ensures the conversion and management of active and reactive power.

Connection point

This is the physical location where the BESS installation connects to the public electricity grid. It determines the technical constraints and conditions for grid access.

Depth of Discharge (DoD)

DoD expresses the proportion of the total battery capacity that has been used during a cycle. Strict management of the DoD is essential to preserve the lifespan of the cells.

Round-trip efficiency

It measures the efficiency of the system in storing and then delivering energy, including losses from the batteries and the PCS. High efficiency minimises overall energy losses.

CEB power fee

The CEB power fee is the Public Electricity Network Usage Tariff in Mauritius. It defines the transport and distribution costs for grid users.

Peak shaving

Peak shaving consists of reducing peaks in electrical demand to avoid exceeding a subscribed power or a technical threshold. The BESS intervenes here by injecting power during peaks.

State of Charge (SoC)

SoC represents the percentage of available energy in the battery relative to its maximum capacity. It is crucial for managing operational limits and avoiding deep discharges.

State of Health (SoH)

SoH indicates the residual capacity of the battery compared to its new state following usage cycles. It allows for the assessment of physical degradation and the useful lifespan of the system.
